Returning to Phoenix this fall is 1776 Challenge Cup. 1776 Challenge Cup is a global competition for the world’s most promising startups to tackle complex, regulated challenges, and to share their vision on a global stage, engage with industry leaders, and win grand prizes.
1776 Challenge Cup is put on in partnership with investment firm Revolution, an active member of entrepreneurial communities and startups outside of Silicon Valley. The first event was put on in 2013 and has successfully expanded to 75 cities as of this year.
Challenge Cup runs on 1776’s UNION network. According to their website, UNION is a “digital platform that connects startup ecosystems together around the world, providing entrepreneurs everywhere the resources and tools they need to be successful.”
When asked what is the most exciting aspect of Challenge Cup returning to Phoenix, Brandon Clarke, co-founder of the StartupAZ Foundation, responded that “1776 and co-sponsor, Revolution (Steve Case’s VC firm) have recognized Arizona as an emerging market for innovative, high-growth companies and continue to be impressed the with quality of our entrepreneurs. It is an exciting opportunity to level up their expectations.”
Phoenix has been welcoming the technology and startup community with open arms, and Brandon Clarke told TechAZ that “Challenge Cup PHX is an opportunity to put local startups on a global stage. 1776’s worldwide network is nearly impossible to recreate independently, so any opportunity to showcase our local talent among that network is incredibly valuable.”
A wide variety of industries are eligible and encouraged to apply. Any startup that applies will be able to do a 30-second rapid pitch that allows them the chance to win an audience choice award of $500 and 1-month membership to Galvanize PHX, a local co-working space. From there, 8 startups will be selected to do a lengthier pitch, followed by a Q&A. The winning startup will be chosen by the judges and sent on a free trip to the Global Finals in New York from November 13th-17th of this year. Once in New York, the finalist will compete for the grand prizes as well as network with media, investors, and customers that could help them succeed even further.
