How to make your workplace reflect your company culture

The way we work is constantly changing. Organizations need to evolve with the times and find new strategies, tools, and approaches to sustain and increase business performance. In doing so, a huge focus has been placed on employee engagement, and a ton of research has been invested in learning how the physical design of the workplace can harness and communicate a company’s culture and brand values—as well as increase performance and financial benefits.

Disengagement in the workplace can cause a toxic environment. The long-term effects can impact client interaction and collaborative performance in a negative fashion. However, there is an opportunity for leaders to revitalize or spark performance by viewing the workplace as a tool to generate positive company culture to engage employees properly.

Culture is intangible and hard to measure, yet easy to sense when you walk into an office space. Culture is infectious and is central to accelerating your business. A number of studies have found that improving company culture makes employees happy through the creation of a desirable working environment.  This in turn increases customer interaction and satisfaction, reduces turnover, and helps attract new and greater talent. A well thought-out and effective workplace strategy is required in order to make this a reality.

An impactful strategy goes beyond efficiently using space to get the most of out of every square foot. It is a deliberately designed plan that allows the company’s culture to direct and generate employee engagement. If your employees feel good when they come into work (or feel involved in something meaningful), they will give you their best day in and day out.

When considering your strategy, determine how the design of your workplace will convey your culture and give employees control of how they want to work. Your goal should be to create a responsive work environment in which your team can produce meaningful work.

The layout and expression within the walls of an office go a long way in communicating a company’s culture and brand. If your company has a standard, corporate, and “bland” work environment, but wants to be viewed as innovative, think about how your customers will receive your “innovative” message when they come to your office. More importantly, think about the people who work in the office every day and are supposed to communicate your company’s message to customers effectively. How will they be inspired do so if they look at nothing but blank white walls and standard work cubes?

A disengaged employee lacks energy and is less likely to carry the company’s culture with them in customer interactions. Effective workplace expression can turn your team members into enthusiastic brand ambassadors in their everyday lives.

Furthermore, it is important to think about promoting collaboration and interconnectedness when building out your workplace strategy. Executing this properly can lead to a faster flow of knowledge across teams. Think about adding open meeting areas for spontaneous interaction, or take a hard look at which teams should be sitting next to each other. Efficient and effective design can create an environment that improves communication and further increases employee happiness and commitment.

Companies who actively develop their culture in the workplace have returned 516 percent higher revenue and 755 percent higher income. Whether you are in startup mode, ramp up or accelerated growth mode, it is crucial to invest in your culture and workplace strategy.
